The Importance of Physical Activity and Mental Wellness for People of All Abilities

Physical activity isn't just about keeping your body in shape—it also plays a crucial role in maintaining good mental health. This holds true for individuals of all abilities! Research shows how physical health and mental well-being are connected in people of different abilities and ages.

Physical activity holds immense benefits for individuals—including those with disabilities. But why is this important? People with disabilities often experience more loneliness and participate less in their communities. The lack of transportation, low self-esteem, being excluded, stereotypes, limited opportunity, and more can cause this. Exercising in a friendly and accessible place can bring people together and make them feel more confident, independent, and happy.

“Living with a disability may be a key aspect of an individual’s core identity and will influence how they perceive and interact with the world around them,” said Turnstone Counselor, Eliana Mason.

What are some things that physical exercise can provide that help with mental wellness?

1. Resiliency- Being resilient is important to mental health because resilient people often have healthy ways to cope and return to a positive mindset when life situations are difficult. Doing sports and staying active can help build resilience by making you feel confident and able to overcome challenges.

2. Improved self-esteem- When you feel better about yourself, your mental health also benefits from those positive feelings.

3. Sense of community- Having a community is key to feeling a sense of belonging, and having a better quality of life. Having support from your community is important for your mental health, especially when you're going through tough times and feel lonely. Being connected with others makes you feel happy and fulfilled, which helps keep your mind healthy.

4. Independence- Independence is equally important to our mental health. It enables us to care for ourselves, pursue goals, and connect with others. Physical activity is especially valuable to people with disabilities because it allows them to explore their identity and interests. It empowers them to pursue their goals without feelings of limitations.

Exercise is great for everyone, no matter how old you are or what your abilities are. It can make you feel strong and happy.
